College Life Tips suggests you DO NOT use your cellphone while driving-ever! Pull over, put the car in park, then use your phone.
According to The New York Times, extensive research shows the dangers of distracted driving. Studies say that drivers using phones are 4 times as likely to cause a crash as other drivers, and the likelihood that they will crash is equal to that of someone with a .08% blood alcohol level, the point at which drivers are generally considered intoxicated.
Do NOT be fooled into thinking you can multitask while driving. “Scientists note that there are limits to how much the brain can multitask,” The New York Times article reports. “When people talk on the phone, they are doing more that simply listening. The words conjure up images in the mind’s eye. That typically doesn’t interfere with driving. The problem starts when a car swerves unexpectedly or a pedestrian steps into traffic and the mind lacks the processing power to react in time.”
Cellphone Use Laws:
Driving while using a cellphone is not banned outright in any state, but some states restrict cellphone use by type of device or by the drivers experience. The Governors Highway Safety Association has a State-by-State Highway Safety Laws-including all states’ cell phone driving laws.
Be sure you are familiar with the laws in your college’s state.
These laws include information on:
- Hand-held cell phone bans for all drivers
- All cell phone bans
- Text messaging laws
- Preemption laws: which are laws by local jurisdictions
If you, your child or someone you care about has difficulties giving up the cellphone use while driving. There are cellphone jammers that can be used to block cellphone signals.
These work more like a manual override of the ringer inside your phone-by emitting a signal that puts the phone into ‘Driving Mode,’ so it may not be used.
